All of the wines from our vineyard have been very expressive in the nose. The 2011 reflects this and shows pretty floral notes accompanied by hints of vanilla and spice. On the palate the wine is balanced and lush with black and blue fruits, spice, savory notes, and a hint of pepper. The profile of this wine is similar to 2010, but with a bit more concentration and richness. Where the 2010 was notable for its seamlessness, the 2011 is characterized more by its power. As always, we barrel fermented our Syrah and aged it in 100% new French oak. This is another stunning example of the heights which well-made, ripe, cool climate California Syrah can attain.
Vineyard Notes
The 2011 Flanagan Syrah continues the string of strong vintages for Flanagan Syrah. Our wine is produced from our Bennett Valley estate and is grown on the steep south face of Bennett Mountain. The site enjoys a predominantly southwest aspect, slopes of up to 35%, red volcanic soils, and powerful upslope maritime winds from the Petaluma Gap. Many people feel both the wine and the vineyard are reminiscent of the great Hermitage region in the Rhone Valley.
