Flavor profile: floral notes, vanilla, ripe blackberry and cassis, hint of mocha

Bennett Valley first became well known for making Merlot back when David Ramey was the winemaker at Matanzas Creek. It's a pleasure to bring great Merlot back to Bennett Valley. The steep hillsides that are the source for our Merlot produce intense fruit with tremendous structure and concentration.

Wine Profile

The 2012 shows the pretty floral notes (lavender) that are typical of our estate, along with hints of vanilla. Visually the wine is a dark scarlet color and completely opaque. It is the nature of this wine to be that way. On the palate the wine reflects the generosity of the 2012 vintage. It is balanced and lush with ripe black berry and cassis fruits, and a hint of mocha. My guess is that very few people would identify this as a California Merlot in a blind tasting. It has a lot in common with a Pomerol from a ripe year (think 1995).
We made tiny amounts of Merlot previous years but the 2012 vintage was the first time we had enough to actually release it. Our Merlot is produced from our Bennett Valley estate and is grown on the steep south face of Bennett Mountain.
