The 2012 shows the pretty floral notes (lavender) that are typical of our estate, along with hints of vanilla. Visually the wine is a dark scarlet color and completely opaque. It is the nature of this wine to be that way. On the palate the wine reflects the generosity of the 2012 vintage. It is balanced and lush with ripe black berry and cassis fruits, and a hint of mocha. My guess is that very few people would identify this as a California Merlot in a blind tasting. It has a lot in common with a Pomerol from a ripe year (think 1995).
